i have a question for you guys and maybe i can learn something in the process. is it not better than have the temp gauge where it exits the engine, rather than the return line from the radiator bottom ? i see nearly everyone in the banshee scene doing this also. doesnt make much sense to me but maybe im missing something here

Multiple choice.

A temp. gauge on the coolant line returning coolant from the radiator to the engine does what?

a. Gives the temperature of the coolant returning to the engine.
b. May give an indication of how well the radiator is working.
c. Does not really tell you what temperature the engine is running.
d. If the gauge shows a temperature change it means the sensor has coolant flowing over it.
f. It may be the most convenient location for the sensor and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
g. The 1st guy to install a sensor put it in the wrong place and everyone else copied him thinking the 1st guy knew what he was doing.

this wasnt a poke at atvfan28. just curious if i had overlooked a good reason to have the gauge located on the return line

I put mine where it is cause its easier to read. Plus it will read the same if i put it on the other line.Even though some people won't believe it.

It seems to me that you'd want to have 2....one exiting the motor and one exiting the radiator

In most cases it would have to say all of the above

Most of the time you cannot position the temp. gauge in a location where you can look at it while moving at a high enough speed where the radiator is doing much cooling. By the time you slow down enough to where you can focus on the gauge and get a precise reading, the radiator as stopped cooling and the temperature exiting the radiator is very close to the temperature entering the radiator. The small inline glycerin filled gauges were not designed to give laboratory accuracy but to give you a ball park idea of the temperature of the coolant in the line it is monitoring.

Under average riding conditions, the temperature exiting the radiator is less than 10 degrees cooler than the temperature of the coolant entering the radiator, unless the radiator has a huge frontal area, the air speed through the radiator is very high and the ambient temperature is very cold.

it makes sense if the bike was stationary both temps be be about the same. seems like if it was moving however there would be more than a couple degree difference. then again ive never tried 2 gauges so ill take your word for it

This is the main reason that guys crawling around in 1st gear for more than a few minutes tend to have heating problems. Most of these radiators do not get much air threw them running below 15 mph.
