which rims for trail riding and offset?
« on: January 19, 2014, 10:34:41 AM »
Thinking about trying out some 4+1 offset rims on my laeger narrow +4 protrax.  Currently have stock rims on the front which are 3.75x1.75 offset.  First thing is am I going to notice a difference in handling to justify the cost of the rims?  I don't think it handles too bad right now but I don't have much seat time on it and I haven't ridden anything else like it before either.  Second thing is which rims should I buy? I don't need bead locks.   And I really don't want to spend $400 on 2 front rims.  But they have to be durable and be able to take a hit from a tree rut or a rock.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks

IMO I would run the 4/1 offset especially with that front end. Of course Hipers would be the best choice but budget and buying used Hipers can be a gamble. I have had great luck with Dwt champion in a box kit. Beadlock rears and non bead fronts can be found new at and under $400. They have a better bolt/nut flange setup that can be replaced if damaged. Plus those wheels will take a beating!

Probably would see very little handling difference. Depending on actual backset measurements the center of the tire will move inboard 1/4-1/2. With the narrower rims you would gain a 1/2-3/4 of tree/rut clearance.

the width of the machine does not bother me where it is right now so that is not a big concern.  Stock rims are strong enough for what I do.  I will look into the dwt champion wheels. Thanks.

Looks like they just use rok-out rolled lip front rims which are $80 a piece. I was looking at those and debating....

Ive had 3 sets, one being beadlock fronts. Well worth the money either way you go. I have Hipers now (4th set Ive owned) only because I took them in on trade. I do like Hipers, BUT, its a gamble buying them used due to the thread inserts. Definitely worth it to buy them new, or atleast excellent used. None of them issues with the Dwts, however they are harder to find used.

I have no problem spending $200 on front rims if they are what I want.  Also looking at some ITP baja rims.  But leaning towards the dwt rok-out wheels.  And they will get a beating in my trails for sure!

Yes. I have to have black wheels.  I looked at the cheaper hiper cf1 sport wheels which are like $120 each but I think a good aluminum would be better for what I am doing.

I like the looks of the dwt evo wheel. It's black and has a really sweet looking reinforcement ring.

I hate not having hard riding time on my hipers but I do love having headlocks and not really having to worry about throwing a bead.  They can be found moderately cheap.  I picked up my whole set of hipers and a set of razr mx fronts for about $475.  That's four tech3 wheels and front tires.  Not too bad.  You do have to watch for cross threading.  Prior owner cross threaded it and the insert just spun around.  I had to buy a new wheel half.  Luckily Hiper is about 1 hour away from me and I got it quickly.

They do weigh a bit in my opinion but for the looks, I'll take it.  Back to the headlock thing.  I'm actually running mine with no air in them and I have no issues except for a wobble on one of my rears.  I hope that's the lack of air and not a jacked up hub or something!

Sorry for being lengthy.  I just like to put any and all experience into what I write.  It helped me out when deciding to buy the parts that I did.

The hipers do look cool that's for sure.  I just don't know if I want to mess around with the inserts spinning in the plastic. And they are a little more than I want to spend on rims.

The key to Hipers is not over-torque and use a dab of anti-seize, but yeah, the initial cost is expensive. Atv Galaxy is typically the cheapest on Hipers, and was the cheapest when I bought my last set of Dwt's. They are drop shipped so expect it to take a few extra days

That's where I bought mine....they beat everyone by about $100 shipped.  It only took four business days to get them.  Email them from one of their ebay listings.  They will get you whatever you want.  The DWTs are really nice because you don't have to worry about the inserts since they use backplates.  The DWT beadlocks are a little lighter, cheaper, and just as tough.
