What MODS should i buy first?
« on: March 10, 2015, 10:06:28 PM »
Just got an 87 250r, it pretty much bone stock expect for a FMF pipe and silencer.

When it comes to bolt on what should i do first?

Heres my thoughts:
1) Nerf Bars
2) Full skid plates (its an AZ bike and I'm bringing it to NY)
3) Rad valve upgrade
4) K&N filter
5) Maybe cr250 ignition

I would love to put +2 a arms and shocks and a +2 axle but i race cars and thats where most my money needs to go this season.

What else could i do that pretty cheap to get some more power out of the motor????

Sounds like skid plates are a must, what pipe are you running right now? Another good question is your budget?

Skid plates are a must and same with the nerf bars!

Pipe wise, its a FMF Gold series Fatty and a FMF shorty Silencer.

I could see spending $1,000 right now

Nerf bars are personal preference I've personally never liked them.
How do you like the pipe, you may want a lower end pipe.
Maybe a set of tires to start with.

I would first check the bike over real well. If things are worn out they need to be replaced first. I.E.the airfilter may be shot, if there is no airbox setup I would be putting one on right away. Then I would do.

1) Full skid plates
2) Nerf Bars(with built in pegs)
3) Suspension
4) 38mm Kehin
5) VForce3 Reeds
6) ESR TRX5 pipe
7) CR250 ignition (I have a bike with/and one without, if you plan to ride at night then it is not the setup for you)

I ran a stock cylinder(no porting) and basically the mentioned setup, with a cr ignition. And that little bike flat out rips. I could defiantly out ride my skill level.

Lrd or LED pipe any work pretty good as well they seem to be a pretty low end and mid pipe.

If you're riding woods and need low end, vf3 is not probably the best choice. The boyseen rad valve seems to be the choice for that type of riding. I beleive I remember seeing a dyno sheet that proved that, but can't remember where. Other than that, I agree with everything rupp said. Although a trx5 is a great all around pipe, I am sure there's a better low end pipe out there. I run the 5 on my duner and absolutely love it.
I ride PINNED! Therefore, no bdt in this household.

what rupp said, i would pull a arms off, shocks off, swingarm off, and check and replace bushings and bearings as needed throughout.
depends if you want to put your money into chassis mods first, or motor upgrades.

nerfs are personal preference. since you mentioned them first i assume u like them. if you pick them up get good ones with built in pegs.
after that there is endless directions u can go on base chassis upgrades, but most of those will max out your budget so u may want to wait.

fmf is a decent low end pipe to compliment minor bolt on mods. begin with intake tract (carb reeds filter). if you want more mid top end u can upgrade to esr 5 pipe later (best all around pipe).
personally the first thing i would do is cr ignition, but they are hard to find and will eat up most of your budget, so you may want to hold off on that.

She's Purdy. Normally it goes pipe, reeds, carb. In your case I might go straight to the suspension if it runs well.

Is there a recommended big bore kit I can buy that would save me the trouble of piecing everything together and just get the motor done all at once?

And then I could buy a set of used shocks and a +2 axle.
