I am in the market for a quad for my son who turn 15. Found one on craiglist near me. So my question is what areas do I need to look at for. cracked frame engine compression. Anymore suggestion.

All of the above. To focus in, look for Cracks on the engine mounts, particularly around the foot peg part of the frame. On the engine itself the most common cracked or damaged part would be around the front sprocket. The chain guard mounts may be cracked or the case in front of the chain if the chain flew off at one point. This is an expensive replacement ($300 ish depending) or pain in the a** fix if you don't weld + pulling the engine apart.

Stand the quad up vertical on the rear grab bar (turn gas off prior). Check under the engine for cracks or a stripped out drain plug plus any rust issues / cracks on the frame. While the bike is standing grab the handle bars and rock the bike side to side. While doing this look for "slop" in the swing arm and rear bearing carrier.

When you go to check it out ask the owner NOT to start it up prior to you showing up. Grab the pipe when you show to see if it's cold to confirm. A warm bike starts easier than a cold one, you want to see how well it starts cold.

Good luck, and post pics!!

The question is are you looking for all OEM, or are you looking for something to ride and don't care if its OEM?
If you are looking for every weekend ride for your 15 year old son i would look under seat, front motor mounts, front shock mounts all for any cracks. Look inside air box to see how owner took care of his machine, clean he took care of it, dirty bike was neglected and engine may need overhaul
Now if you are looking oem i look at fenders, tires, wheels, grab bar, seat, or anything else that cant be bought because Honda discontinued. Engines I never worry about that most engine parts are relatively inexpensive and plentiful.

The one on craiglist has a fmf  pipe,  36 pj carb. stock cylinder and stock axle and stock suspension. I didn't know all the stress points on the frame to look for.
Thanks Paul

What about the engine?  stripped bolts, chain guide area, engine mounts and oil drain plug. The cleanness  of the bike.
